From which city?
The first question that will arise will be that of the departure. The most common is from Uyuni, nearly sixty agencies exist. Tupiza, more to the South East is also a possible starting point, much less agencies however. Finally, it is also possible to start from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. The route is the same from one agency to another, but not a departure city to another.
From Uyuni
This is a turn of 3 days / 2 nights. The itinerary begins with the Salar and finished by geysers, Laguna Verde and hot springs. Direct return (without stopping shot possible) to Uyuni for daytrips or base in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
From Tupiza:
This is a tower 4 days / 3 nights. The itinerary ends with the day and the Salar de Uyuni more compared to is to cross the beautiful landscapes of South Lipez.
There are far fewer agencies that Uyuni, making it more for most image conscious because more exposed branches.
Personally, we chose this solution for:
avoid having to choose among too many agency in Uyuni
enjoy a 4th day for South Lipez landscapes
you can see the sunrise over the Salar
avoid making to / from Bolivia. We had hoped and continue south through the center and north of Bolivia
good returns were done on a Tupiza agency, we have therefore chosen
One could also say that ultimately the main attraction (the Salar de Uyuni) makes the beauty of the landscape so crescendo. What is true for me, however, at the end of round one is a little more tired than before.
From San Pedro de Atacama in Chile:
Some agencies offer a ride. The route is the reverse of that starting from Uyuni. However, by a Chilean agency actually with its cars and drivers, others contract with the Bolivian agencies. Thus, the transfer by mini-bus to the border is provided by the agency with which you treated by cons, you are then dispatched to 4x4 Bolivia and the turn is thus done by a Bolivian agency with which you have had no contact.
Coming from San Pedro de Atacama, we have several solutions: we take several buses to get to Uyuni and tour from Uyuni. To tour from San Pedro. Or join Tupiza, which was our preference, but there it is not direct. He took us take a bus to Salta, Argentina. However, we stayed there a few days to visit the city. Then a bus to Argentina / Bolivia border, crossing the border on foot and then take a bus (train, more comfortable, but are also less frequent) to Tupiza.
