It is a small town on the Australian east coast where time seems to stand still. Long hair, rainbow sky clothes, surfing and jam sessions on the beach at sunset: Byron Bay has that little something that makes you want to put your bags and never leave!
A little history
Byron Bay's story begins in the 70s, when hippies and some surfing enthusiasts put their suitcases on this small piece of land located to the east of the Australian mainland. The city quickly became a hub of culture and against-the refuge of Australian celebrities lacking in nature. Today unavoidable attraction of Australia, Byron Bay has retained an authenticity and a charm of its own. Between its inescapable surf spots, its bohemian designer shops, stalls bio products, its yoga and its population bigarée to cool, the city attracts 1 million visitors a year.
A bohemian town in the heart of nature
Unlike its neighbor, Surfers Paradise, which despite its idyllic name turned into a concrete and resort overrun by fast food, Byron Bay has remained a small town on a human scale and in harmony with nature. Fast food restaurants and more than one storey buildings are prohibited! There is a period architecture consisting of wooden houses lined with tropical gardens, airy streets and close proximity to the ocean and the hinterland (hippie, too). The lucky ones were able to build it among the most beautiful properties in Australia's east coast.
What to do in Byron Bay?
Stroll along the downtown shops and have a look at Spell, bohemian brand that is emulated worldwide. Then go enjoy a coffee and a fruit tart properly installed in the plush sofas cafe terraces of the center. Byron Bay also offers a lovely walk along the Cape Byron, from Main Beach to Byron Lighthouse. In season, one can observe the humpback whales migrating! On the other side of the cape, there is Tallow Beach, ideal to relax, take a jog or some surfing. In the late afternoon, when the sun begins to decline slowly, go to Main Beach for a small concert drum or a surf session with the dolphins!
