Cancún and the Riviera Maya, Mexico

situation

The city of Cancun is located north east of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea, right in the Riviera Maya, a strip running from north to south of the peninsula. Mexico City, it takes about 2 hours 24 bus or plane to get there. The city lies on a peninsula in the shape of L, 400m wide and 21km long.
This city was created for tourism for its white sandy beaches where many palm trees will stand, turquoise blue sea where magnificent coral reefs decorate this sea, leaving many people dream of paradise for his beauty. Large residential center has mainly developed in recent years, enjoying a subtropical climate with low rainfall.

In reality, there are two Cancún:
  • the city center, located on the coast with few hotels and no beach.
  • Isla Cancún, on prequ'île, which is actually a good hotel-lined area beaches.

History

Originally Cancún was a Mayan territory (the name means in Mayan container at the end of the rainbow). Before 1970, it was only a sandy island with barely 100 inhabitants living Mayan fishing and chile harvest. Then the government decided to make it an international tourist resort. Since then, the population in the hundreds of thousands and more than 200,000 visitors (especially non-Mexican) go there every year, enjoying the beautiful beaches and the perfect climate. The city is populated as that of Mexican Americans and the dollar dominates the Mexican peso.

Tourist attractions

Besides the hotels, the resort of Cancun has a convention center with an auditorium hosting many shows, an archaeological museum and another museum with items found during searches.
* Side beaches, there are many. The hotels do not have private beaches, allowing access to all on any beach!

  • Playa Linda, Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas, north of the island, offer them swim in the Bahia Mujeres.
  • Playa Chac Mool, Playa Marlin and playa Ballenas offer big waves and beautiful vistas, ocean side.
  • The Laguna Nichupte is ideal for water sports, between the island and the coast of Cancun.

Maya sites side are in between Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc: Pinturas, San Miguel, Yamilum, Pok-ta-poc, El Conchero. these sites are small, but there are foundations of the pyramids supporting temples. It was also discovered more than 50 graves in cete region. And it is important not to forget to visit the archaeological sites of Tulum on the Riviera Maya and Chichen Itza are still two great jewels of the Mayan civilization.

From Cancun, there are a few ferries that leave more precisely a dock near Playa Linda to Isla Mujeres. But most of the boats leave from Puerto Juarez or Punta Sam, north of Cancun. A tens of kilometers south, there is also Punta Bete where there are 3 beautiful beaches, ideal for scuba diving. A few kms further south, we come to Playa del Carmen, a port town from where the boats to the island of Cozumel.
